Bathtub installation in San Jose, alcove and freestanding

A chipped alcove tub, a freestanding soaker for a remodel, or a tub going back in where a shower used to be. Tubs are heavy, the drain has to line up exactly, and the valve and spout have to match, so the plumbing is planned before the tub is delivered.

Quick answer

Bathtub installation in San Jose means removing the old tub, setting the new one level on its bed, connecting the drain and overflow, and fitting the valve and spout at the right heights. Freestanding tubs need a floor drain in exactly the right spot and, often, a floor-mounted tub filler.

The job

Planning a tub before it arrives

Tubs have their drains at one end or in the center, left or right handed, and a freestanding tub puts its drain wherever its shape does. The drain in the floor has to match. We measure the rough opening, the drain location and the valve height before you order, so the tub fits the space and the plumbing meets it where it should.

Replacing a tub with a shower is covered under shower installation, and whole-room layouts under bathroom remodel plumbing.

Cost factors

What changes the price of a tub install

  • Tub type Freestanding tubs need floor drain work.
  • Floor Slab drain moves cost more than raised floors.
  • Removal Cast iron tubs take more labor to remove.
  • Filler and valve Floor-mounted fillers add supply work.
  • Wall finish Tying in the flange depends on the surround.

Every job is priced after we see it; any published range is for planning only.

Alcove tub replacement

Replacing an alcove tub means cutting back the wall finish above the flange, removing the old tub, checking the subfloor, and setting the new tub level on a mortar or foam bed so it does not flex underfoot. The drain and overflow are connected through an access panel or from below, and the tub flange is tied into the new wall finish so water cannot get behind it. Cast iron tubs weigh several hundred pounds, so removing one is planned around the stairs and doorways involved.

Freestanding tub rough-in

A freestanding tub drains through the floor, so the drain has to sit exactly where the tub's outlet will land, which means knowing the tub model before rough-in. On a raised floor the drain runs between joists; on a slab the concrete is cut. The filler is either floor-mounted, with supply lines rising through the floor, or wall-mounted with its valve in the wall behind. We lay out both from the tub's template and pressure-test the supplies before the floor is finished.

Tub drain and overflow

The drain and overflow assembly connects the tub to the trap and lets overflow water escape through the upper opening. Old assemblies leak at the shoe gasket or the overflow gasket, often slowly enough to stain the ceiling below for months. When installing a tub, we fit a new assembly, trip-lever, toe-touch or lift-and-turn to suit the finish, and water-test it by filling the tub to the overflow and draining it while the connections underneath are watched for the slightest drip.

Tub and shower combo

A tub-shower combination needs a valve set at the right height for both uses, a diverter to switch between spout and head, and a surround that is waterproof well above the showerhead. When the tub is replaced, the valve often is too, so the trim matches and the valve gets current anti-scald protection. We coordinate the valve depth with the new wall finish, since acrylic surrounds and tile set the valve at different depths from the stud face, and the trim will not seal otherwise.

Local context

Slab or raised floor: what it means for a new tub

On a slab-floor house in San Jose, moving a tub drain means cutting and restoring concrete, and published local cost guides put that kind of slab access at roughly $2,000 to $4,000 added to a job. The same change on a raised foundation costs about half as much. We check which kind of floor you have before a freestanding tub is chosen, since the drain location can move the budget as much as the tub itself does.
