Napa and American Canyon sit just north of our Vallejo head office. Here is what the 2014 earthquake taught the area about pipes, and how we cover the south end of the county.
The southern end of Napa County, the city of Napa and American Canyon, is covered from our Vallejo head office. Phones are answered 24/7. The area knows what earthquakes do to pipes: after the 2014 South Napa earthquake, the City of Napa repaired 144 water mains, and the same shaking tests gas and water lines inside homes.
The magnitude 6.0 South Napa earthquake struck at 3:20 a.m. on August 24, 2014, on the West Napa Fault between Napa and American Canyon. By mid-September the City of Napa had counted repairs to 144 water mains. Those were the city's pipes; inside homes, the weak points in a quake are the water heater, the gas connectors and the shutoff valves.
The steps that help are simple: two straps on the water heater, flexible gas connectors in good condition, a main water shutoff that actually closes, and for many homes an earthquake gas shutoff valve. Our earthquake readiness guide walks through all of it.
The City of Napa draws its water from three sources, and the Napa Sanitation District provides wastewater service. On the house side, the work we see is what you would expect in an older valley town: aging supply lines, water heaters, drains and sewer laterals, plus gas lines for kitchens and outdoor cooking.
Gas work, from a new line to a gas line repair, is permitted and pressure-tested before anything is relit.

In Napa and American Canyon, the regular calls are water heater replacements and strapping, leaks, main-line clogs, and readiness work: shutoff valves that will not turn, missing straps, and old gas connectors. Emergencies are dispatched from the Vallejo office at any hour.
American Canyon is the closest Napa County city to our head office, and the city of Napa is part of our regular area. For Yountville, St. Helena, Calistoga and the rest of the upper valley, call and ask first, and the dispatcher will tell you plainly how soon a plumber can get there.
