Shower repair in San Jose for valves, cartridges, diverters and pan leaks

A shower that drips after it is turned off, a handle that swings too far before it runs hot, a diverter that sends half the water out the tub spout, or a stain spreading under the floor. Most shower repairs happen behind the handle or under the pan.

Answering 24/7 Valve and cartridge repairs Pan leak testing
Quick answer

Shower repair in San Jose usually means replacing a worn cartridge or valve seats for a drip or temperature problem, rebuilding a diverter that leaks to the tub spout, or finding a pan leak with a flood test. Most valve work is done from the front through the trim, without opening the wall.

The job

Drip, temperature or leak: three different repairs

A drip from the head after the water is off is a valve problem. A shower that swings hot and cold, or never gets hot enough, usually has a worn cartridge or a misset anti-scald stop. Water in the ceiling below, or at the baseboard outside the shower, is a pan, drain or valve-body leak, and that one is found with testing before anything is opened.

A new shower or a tub conversion is covered under shower installation. Leaks that could be coming from somewhere else are traced under leak detection.

Shower cartridge being replaced in a San Jose bathroom

Shower valve replacement

When a valve body is corroded, cracked, or an obsolete model with no parts left, the valve itself is replaced. That means opening the wall from behind where there is access, from a closet or the room next door, or cutting a tile opening from the front that a larger trim plate can cover. A new pressure-balance or thermostatic valve is soldered or crimped in, tested and fitted with new trim. While the wall is open we check the supply lines to the valve, since they are often as old as the valve.

Cartridge swap

Most single-handle shower valves use a cartridge that mixes hot and cold and, in pressure-balance valves, guards against sudden temperature changes. Worn cartridges drip, stiffen, or lose the balancing function so the shower turns cold when a toilet flushes. We identify the valve maker and model, fit the matching cartridge, clean scale from the valve body, and set the anti-scald limit stop so the handle cannot run too hot. Moen, Delta and Kohler cartridges are specific to their own valves.

Diverter repair

A tub-shower diverter sends water up to the showerhead instead of out of the spout. When it wears, water keeps coming from the spout while the shower runs, wasting water and weakening the spray. Spout-mounted diverters are fixed by replacing the tub spout; valve-mounted diverters on three-handle setups need a new stem or cartridge. We confirm which type you have before ordering parts, and check that the new spout is the right length for the pipe it slides onto, so it seals and sits tight to the wall.

Shower pan leak

A shower pan leak shows up as a ceiling stain below, damp baseboards outside the shower, or loose tile at the floor. The cause can be the pan liner, the drain connection, or grout and caulk letting water behind the tile. We separate them with testing: a flood test with the drain plugged checks the pan, and running water only on the walls checks the surround. The fix ranges from resealing the drain to replacing the pan, and we only recommend tearing out what the test shows has failed.

Local context

Older shower valves in San Jose homes

Plenty of San Jose bathrooms still run on their original shower valves, including older two- and three-handle designs whose parts are getting hard to find. When a cartridge or stem is no longer made, the choice is between a conversion kit that fits the existing valve body and a new valve behind the wall. We check part availability for your valve before recommending either, so the repair is not held up waiting on a discontinued piece.
