Garbage disposal repair and installation in San Jose kitchens
A disposal that hums but will not spin, water leaking into the cabinet, or a unit that finally gave up. Most jams can be freed on the spot; a leak from the body means replacement, and we install the new unit with the drain and dishwasher connections done right.
Garbage disposal repair in San Jose usually means freeing a jam, resetting the overload, or fixing a leak at the sink flange or drain connection. A leak from the disposal body itself cannot be repaired, because it means the grinding chamber has corroded through, so the unit is replaced.

The job
Repair, or time for a new unit?
A disposal that hums is jammed; one that is silent has tripped its reset or lost power. Both are usually fixable. Leaks depend on where they start: the sink flange and the drain and dishwasher connections are repairable, while a leak from the bottom of the unit means the housing has failed.
A sink that backs up even with the disposal running is usually the kitchen line; see drain cleaning. Dishwasher connections are covered under appliance hookups.

Jammed or humming disposal
A hum means the motor is getting power but the plate cannot turn, usually because a bone, pit or utensil is wedged against the grinding ring. With the power off at the switch or breaker, we free it using the hex key socket on the bottom of the unit, clear the chamber, press the reset button and test. We also look at what caused it; fibrous peels and grease that hardens around the impellers are common culprits, and a unit that jams every week is usually worn out.
Leaking disposal
Where the water appears tells us the fix. A leak at the top, where the disposal meets the sink, is the sink flange and its putty or gasket, which we reseal. A leak at the side comes from the dishwasher inlet or the drain elbow, both repairable with new gaskets or clamps. A leak from the bottom or around the reset button means water is inside the housing, and at that point replacement is the only fix, since the internal seals and chamber have failed.
New disposal install
A new disposal needs a secure mount to the sink flange, a drain connection at the right height for the trap, the dishwasher knockout removed if a dishwasher drains into it, and a proper electrical connection, either plug-in or hardwired to match the existing setup. We size the unit to the household, since a larger motor handles more without jamming. InSinkErator and other makers offer units from basic to quiet continuous-feed models, and we install the one you choose, including a unit you have already bought.
Disposal removal and plain drain
Some homeowners decide they are better off without a disposal, especially when the kitchen line clogs often. Removing it means fitting a standard basket strainer and tailpiece, reworking the trap to the new height, and rerouting the dishwasher drain to a sink tailpiece with a proper high loop or air gap. The result is a simpler drain with fewer parts to fail and less to jam. The electrical connection is capped safely, or left for an electrician if the circuit needs changing.

Local context
Disposals and old cast iron kitchen lines
In San Jose homes built before the mid-1970s, the kitchen drain past the disposal is often still original cast iron, and its rough, corroding interior catches ground food that would slide through smooth plastic pipe. A disposal in one of those kitchens can grind perfectly and still leave the sink backing up a few feet into the wall. When a disposal call turns out to be a slow line, we clear it and tell you what shape the pipe behind it is in.

What you can try, and when to call
Two fixes are safe with the power off. Never put a hand inside the chamber.
| Situation | Do it yourself | Call us |
|---|---|---|
| Humming, not turning | Power off, turn the hex socket underneath | Still jammed after that |
| Silent | Press the red reset button under the unit | A reset that trips again |
| Slow draining | Run cold water longer after grinding | A clog in the drain line |
| Leaking | Note where the water appears | Any leak from the body |
| Replacing it | Possible if it plugs in | Hardwired units and dishwasher tie-ins |
